13 Sins – Quickies Review

A down on his luck guy gets wrangled into participating in an underground competition where he must complete tasks of increasing difficulty as well moral and legal consequences. A real surprise. High violent content and the movie just moves along briskly. Just when you think it gets itself stuck in a corner, a new twist …

My Bloody Valentine (1981) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 5 / Film #3

Set in a small mining town where Valentine’s dances have been outlawed for 20 years and everyone plays a harmonica. One of the many holiday-themed slasher flicks that were churned out in the early ’80s. Decent kills are bogged down by annoying characters. Passable as a cult favourite, but far from a classic.

Lovely Molly – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 5 / Film #2

I had heard decent things, but I didn’t see what all the fuss was about. Just your run of the mill, ghost story, haunted past, possession type flick. Script seems to go all over the place and at times it’s hard to figure out what it’s trying to tell you. Performances fall flat and so …

Babadook, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 5 / Film #1

I was really looking forward to seeing this one, and it was good but not as good as I would have liked it to be. To no fault of its own, it didn’t live up to the hype or to my heightened expectations. It was definitely spooky and a very well developed script. The top-notch …

Let Us Prey – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 4 / Film #2

This is a wonderfully gory film set one night at a small Scottish police station where they are paid a visit by a mysterious stranger. The always reliable, Liam Cunningham, is extremely unnerving as the stranger who is there to deal out justified malevolence. Definitely dark in tone with a biting sense of humour. Good, …

Mummy, The (1932) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 4 / Film #1

This was my first viewing and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Though it’s not scary by today’s standards, it’s easy to see why it is a classic and why it would have been deemed terrifying back then. Some of the visuals and dialog would have been quite daring for the time. Karloff is utterly captivating.

Notting Hill – Quickie Review

One of my wife’s all-time favourite movies and one of my favourites from the romantic comedy genre. Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts are effortless charming throughout. However the supporting cast steals most scenes they are in, Rhys Ifans in particular. Textbook ending, but the wit and intelligence of Richard Curtis’ script is a notch well …
