Full Metal Jacket – Quickie Review

Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam war classic told in two parts, boot camp and combat. The first half of the film is by far the best part of the movie. Even though R. Lee Ermey is basically playing himself, no one could have done it any better. He’s so f’ing good. While still intense, the second half …

Big Lebowski, The – Quickie Review

This is the absolute epitome of a Coen Brothers movie. Quirky, well-rounded characters. Absurd scenarios. And a wickedly biting screenplay. Jeff Bridges is brilliant as The Dude. He just embodies the character and there’s nothing better than a Sam Elliot voice over. I love this movie.

Office Space – Quickie Review

This is easily one of the most notable comedies of all time. No matter how many times I watch this movie, I always smile with anticipation of a joke and then laugh when it arrives. Everyone’s comedic timing is perfect and the script is flawless.

Django Unchained – Quickie Review

Offensive, violent and many colourful characters. That’s this film is a nutshell as well as every other Tarantino film. One great scene after another and Tarantino is the master of dialog. However, this film belongs to Waltz and DiCaprio. I could close my eyes and just listen to the performances, delicious ear candy.

From Hell – Quickie Review

A graphic and exciting re-telling of the Jack The Ripper mystery. A very cool 19th century police procedural. While this is only one of many theories of the true identity of the Ripper, it seems very plausible. Johnny Depp and Ian Holm are excellent. Not for the squeamish.

Hot Fuzz – Quickie Review

A hot shot, big city cop is sent to a sleepy countryside town because the higher-ups are tired of him showing up the other policemen. This is an ultra funny, ultra violent action thriller send-up. So many smart references to other films, great one-liners, sight gags and the tremendously talented cast from top to bottom. …

Now You See Me – Quickie Review

A group of touring illusionists are using their performances to pull off heists and then they reward their audiences with the loot. I’ve always been a sucker for a good heist movie and then when you throw in a magic twist, I’m hooked. Very entertaining, but implausible, comedic thriller. Likable cast and it keeps you guessing all …

Repulsion – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 31 / Film #3

A quiet Belgian immigrant is left alone in an apartment while her sister travels to Italy. And soon the isolation drives her to madness. Polanski’s classic. Catherine Deneuve is stunning as the young woman slowly losing her grip on reality. Beautifully shot.

Monster House – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 30 / Film #3

A foreboding house in the neighbour turns out to be a living and breathing entity. Wonderfully creative design for the ever transforming house. It actually looks terrifying, but not to me. I’m a big boy. While it’s only 9 years old the animation already looks outdated. They look like more detailed characters from The Sims. …

ParaNorman – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 30 / Film #2

A boy who can talk to ghosts must save his town from a group of zombies and stop a longstanding curse. Very clever and funny movie. I love this style of animation. Younger kids may find it scary, I know my son did when he first saw it, but now he’s fine with it. Full …
