Invisible Man, The (1933) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 28 / Film #4

First off, I love Claude Rains so this review will probably be a bit biased. He is splendidly evil, ruthless, eloquent and darkly comedic. This is probably my favourite of the classic Universal Monster films. Rains is perfectly cast since his voice is so refined and distinguishable. Superb special effects for the time. Completely captivating.

Searching For Sugar Man – Quickie Review

The true story of recording artist, Sixto Rodriguez. A man haled by many as the voice of his generation. He never made a dent stateside and for that he lived in poverty all the while he was tremendously popular and successful in various countries overseas. Extremely powerful and moving movie of discovery. His music is …

Nightwatch (1997) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 27 / Film #5

Insanely twisted and unsettling suspense thriller. It has been a while since I’d last since it and I forgot just how much I enjoyed it. Continually intense, keeps you guessing all the way through. Delightfully disturbing with a sly sense of humour. Stellar cast including Brad “f’ing” Dourif.

Thirst (2009) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 27 / Film #2

A botched medical experiment causes a priest to contract vampirism and now he has to battle his beliefs in order to stay alive. Moody and layered vampire flick from the director of Oldboy. I love the juxtaposition between the two vampires and their views on killing and the humour it creates. Outstanding performances by the …

Afflicted – Quickie Review

Highly original take on the vampire mythology and one of the best uses of the found footage genre. The special effects are stunning and seamless. An absolute delight from start to finish. Just suburb film-making.

Uninvited, The (1944) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 26 / Film #3

What starts off as a whimsical countryside comedy, slowly morphs into a slapstick horror and then finally into a full-blooded suspense with a twisting script. Perhaps too much exposition to fully explain the goings-on, but entertaining nonetheless. Ray Milland is utterly charming in the lead.

Cell, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 26 / Film #2

Visually stunning and darkly disturbing at times. The ending is exceptionally thrilling with three stories of crisis happening simultaneously and expertly edited together. Vincent D’Onofrio gives a towering performance as the troubled serial killer and his terrifying inner self. Definitely not for everyone, but I love it.

Conjuring, The – Quickie Review

Very few movies have the ability to scare me any more. Jump scares don’t count, that’s just a reflex. However, this movie is so well executed. There is a constant feeling of dread and uneasiness. Smart script, brilliant pacing. The tension just builds and builds with a few brief moments of relief. A stellar achievement.

Thing, The (1982) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 24 / Film #3

It had been a long time since I’d last seen this film, and it’s even better than I remember. I’ve watched so much crap this month, it’s so refreshing when story, special effects, acting and everything else just work together so symbiotically. Near perfection. I just can’t believe how much this movie was inspired by …

Session 9 – Quickie Review

One of the most atmospherically creepy movies I have ever seen. The tone is set earlier with subtle chills dropped during the slow build which leads to a sensational climax. Spot-on performances from the terrific ensemble. This is among a handful of movies that leave me with an indelible sustained sense of fear after each …
