This Is Where I Leave You – Quickie Review

Extremely funny and often very touching comedic-drama featuring a phenomenal ensemble cast. I was surprised about how much I enjoyed this movie. While there is absolutely no need for a sequel, I hope for one just so I could see this cast perform together again.

Bourne Ultimatum, The – Quickie Review

The action is amped up for the third entry in the successful Bourne series. In my opinion, it’s the best of the series. Incredible chase sequences and fight choreography. I really enjoyed how it’s tied in with the previous film. David Strathairn is a very welcomed addition to the cast, but he’d be an exceptional addition …

Duplicity – Quickie Review

A fun and clever corporate espionage flick. Lots of twists and double-crosses along the way. Terrific chemistry between the two leads and it also features one of the best opening credit sequences you’ll ever see.

House Of The Devil, The – Quickie Review

This is a horror movie, through and through. A nice throwback to the horror flicks of the ’70s. A real slow-burner. This movie builds to a tremendous payoff. Co-starring, the always marvelous and criminally under used, Tom Noonan. One of the best horrors in recent memory.

Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan – Quickie Review

Fearless. It’s absolutely fearless… and shameless. Constantly funny, intentionally absurd and offensive. Cohen is masterful.

Event Horizon – Quickie Review

This is essentially Hellraiser In Space. Incredibly haunting tone throughout the movie. One of the few movies that consistently gives me the willies. Sam Neil is deliciously insane. Watch the found footage of the captain’s video log in slo-mo, it’s horrifying.

Abyss, The – Quickie Review

Wonderfully thrilling, thoroughly intense, emotionally uplifting movie with absolutely dazzling special effects. For my money, this is James Cameron’s best film. And as good as it is, the director’s cut is even more phenomenal. It really fleshes out the story more and adds some stellar visuals of the alien landscape.

Shoot ‘Em Up – Quickie Review

This is an over the top, campy, action gore fest and it’s awesome. It features some of the most original and inventive gun play choreography you’ll ever see. Super fun. Paul Giamatti devours each scene with a wonderfully amped up performance. Clive Owen is perfectly stoic as the hero who always eats his vegetables and makes …

Devil’s Rejects, The – Quickie Review

Rob Zombie’s follow-up to House of 1000 Corpses is a hyper-violent crime romp with exceptional dark humour and very well written dialogue, almost lyrical in parts. Not for everyone, I remember seeing a few people walk out of the theatre when I saw it. Bill Moseley is terrific.

Changeling, The – Quickie Review

Near perfect, proudly Canadian, haunted house movie that was partly filmed less than 5 minutes away from the house in which I grew up. The movie is 35 years old and I saw it for the first time less than 10 years ago. It is the last movie to legitimately scare me. There’s a real …
