Burning, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 27 / Film #1

Fantastic slasher flick from the early 80s. Solid story, really gruesome makeup effects by Tom Savini. It’s crazy how many people involved with this movie are still working today. I don’t know what’s funnier: that this was one of the Weinsteins first movies or seeing Jason Alexander with a full head of hair.

Cop Land – Quickie Review

An absolutely cracking cop drama. The cast is a once is a lifetime ensemble. Some great twists and turns and the ending is tremendously satisfying. Hands down, the best performance of Stallone’s career.

Dracula (1931) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 26 / Film #1

Original English language telling of the Bram Stoker classic. Legendary score and legendary performance by Lugosi. I was a little disappointed that he didn’t shout, “Pull the strings!” or say something disparaging about Karloff. While highly enjoyable, I couldn’t get past the hoaky fake bat. Although, it didn’t look as ridiculous as the actors trying …

Killer Klowns From Outer Space – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 25 / Film #5

Total lunacy. Marvelously inspired art direction and prop design. Every aspect of clown and carnival culture has been imaginatively repurposed. There are some freaky-ass clowns in this film that can only be defeated by having their noses shot. John Vernon is a hoot as the skeptical policeman.

Cold Prey – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 25 / Film #2

This is a Norwegian made horror is about a group of friends snowboarding in a remote area and then they have to seek refuge in an abandoned hotel after one of them breaks their leg. Effectively built-in spooky atmosphere with the location. A half hour for character intros and then all hell breaks loose. With …

Grabbers – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 23 / Film #3

A small island of the coast of Ireland has been invaded by aliens, the only way to survive: to be obliteratingly drunk. Very fun and very funny horror-comedy definitely in the vein of Tremors. The creatures themselves come in various sizes. At its largest state, it is probably best described as a giant centi-pus. Plenty …

Dead Birds – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 23 / Film #2

Early work from the writer of You’re Next and The Guest. This is a surprisingly effective horror-western about a group of bank robbers that hide out in a haunted house after a heist goes wrong. Creepy effects, genuine jump scares. Cast of great character actors including Mark Boone Junior and Michael Shannon. A nice find …

Frankenstein (1931) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 23 / Film #1

You all know the story. Mad scientist and his assistant rummage through graveyards and medical schools for body parts to build a man and reanimate him. Simplistic story telling, jumps right in without exposition. With limited speech, Karloff creates a menacing yet sympathetic monster. Well-deserving of its horror classic status.

Mimic – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 21 / Film #2

Guillero del Toro’s first American movie. It’s a slick modern update on the mutated creature features of the 1950s. I watched the director’s cut. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the theatrical version so I couldn’t tell you the difference, but I enjoyed this alternate version. Solid story, great creature design and effects, great …

Sleepy Hollow (1999) – Quickie Review

This movie is so gleefully over the top violent. Crazy gory, almost cartoonish. This Tim Burton movie is sooooooooooooooo Tim Butron. The art direction is stunning. Depp is effortlessly humourous as the cowardly Crane and Walken is positively frightening as the Horseman in flashbacks. Clever script, great ensemble, gorgeous Gothic horror.
