Monster House – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 30 / Film #3
A foreboding house in the neighbour turns out to be a living and breathing entity. Wonderfully creative design for the ever transforming house. It actually looks terrifying, but not to me. I'm a big boy. While it's only 9 years old the animation already looks outdated. They look like more detailed characters from The Sims. It matters not, though. This is a very entertaining movie with a script that includes humour aimed above its target audience. … [Read more...]
Fido – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 28 / Film #5
Pleasantville with zombies. I think that's pretty accurate description. A smart comedy with an occasional zombie attack. Billy Connolly is utterly charming as the loyal title character. However, the whole cast is great as everyone is playing it straight. It would be very easy to ham it up with this subject matter, but that doesn't happen here. … [Read more...]
Slither – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 27 / Film #6
A meteor crashes near a small town and its contents start to infect the town's citizens. How have I not seen this movie until now? It's so awesome. It has everything I love. So much blood, so much gooey ickiness. First class humour mixed with cheesy one-liners. This will immediately be added to my regular rotation. I can't believe I'm giving 5 stars to a movie starring someone from Edmonton. … [Read more...]
Cold Prey – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 25 / Film #2
This is a Norwegian made horror is about a group of friends snowboarding in a remote area and then they have to seek refuge in an abandoned hotel after one of them breaks their leg. Effectively built-in spooky atmosphere with the location. A half hour for character intros and then all hell breaks loose. With so few characters to kill off, it finds many ways to keep the tension and the gore amped up. Nice nod to The Shining with a scene involving room 237. … [Read more...]
Silent Hill – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 13 / Film #4
This movie is way too long and way too convoluted. I'm sure the game of which it's based is very expansive so it was hard to condense it fluidly. The art direction is great and it looks gorgeous. And there's a little bit of blood in it. Of all the crazy imagery and events in the this movie, the craziest thing is that Sean Bean is in it, and he lives. … [Read more...]
