Cenobites are people, too... I hate that I've started to need more out of my horror film viewing experience. I used to be fine with a movie only having gratuitous violence and nothing else. Recently, I've been needing a little more substance. I think it's because of the slow burn / less violent / well-written horror flicks that have come out lately such as It Follows, The Witch, A Quiet Place, The Conjuring, etc. Enter Hellbound. It's quite violent, but the story is very muddled. I would … [Read more...]
The Wizard Of Gore (1970) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror (2018) – Day 10
A master illusionist performs to a crowds of two dozen people, at most. His act first off with generic parlour tricks and ends with is performing an act of torture on a female volunteer from the audience. This is not good movie. I wanted to like it because I am a fan of Herschell Gordon Lewis, the aptly nicknamed the Godfather of Gore. Crude special effects and cutaways of bloody meat are sewn together to try and make an interesting story. The film is very repetitive. There's a stage … [Read more...]
God Told Me To – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror (2018) – Day 9
I am a big Larry Cohen fan so there is always a little bias and I'll except things easier in his films than others. If you're not a fan of Cohen, get out! Or maybe you just don't realize you're fan because you unfamiliar with his cult-laden filmography (The It's Alive trilogy, The Stuff, Maniac Cop). He also had some moderate mainstream success with 2002's Phone Booth. A devout NY detective investigates a spree on mass murders wherein all of the suspects individually confess that "God Told Me … [Read more...]
Chillerama – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror (2018) – Day 8
The last night of a drive-in theatre is the setting and the wraparound story for this horror/comedy anthology. This film starts with a man getting his wang bitten off by the corpse of his ex-wife, and then we're off... I'm a big fan of horror inspired anthologies such as Creepshow, Trick 'r Treat and Body Bags but this one just didn't do it for me. It is continuously, unnecessarily and overtly sexual. And the violence in the last act is shockingly over the top. This film and the films within … [Read more...]
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror (2018) – Day 7
From the future director of Dirty Harry comes the original "body snatcher" movie. You know the story. You've seen this or one of its three remakes. I've now seen all of them. I saw them in the following order: 3, 4, 2, 1. Since I grew-up on sci-fi and horror films from the 80s, I am very accustomed to seeing an old aggressive, frantic Kevin McCarthy. It was quite a refreshing change to see a younger aggressive, frantic Kevin McCarthy. For me, the 1978 version is better, but this film is … [Read more...]
Mr. Jones – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror (2018) – Day 6
A young couple decides to move to the woods because that's what people do when they want to "find themselves". After being in seclusion for a while, they discover that a famous reclusive Banksy-like artist lives near them. He is known for creating creepy scarecrow/talisman type sculptures which have always been shrouded with mythos and mystery. Soon strange things are afoot almost as though they had moved to a Circle K (kudos to those whom get the reference). Reality and dream worlds collide … [Read more...]
John Dies At The End – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror (2018) – Day 5
This movie could be described as the love child of H.P. Lovecraft, W.S. Burroughs and Harold Ramis, but instead it is the brain child of writer/director Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, The Beastmaster, Bubba Ho-Tepp). And it's awesome. I went into this movie without knowing anything about it other than it was a Coscarelli movie. That was enough for me. I feel it is my duty to allow others to go into the movie the same way so I'm not going to say anything exacting about it. Basically, all you need … [Read more...]
Anatomy – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror (2018) – Day 4
This 2000 German release is about a medical student (Franka Potente) that gets awarded a place a prestigious med school only to uncover a secret society which is involved in questionable medical practices. Ok thriller with not many thrills. It shares many of the same themes as the 1996 film Extreme Measures starring Gene Hackman and Hugh Grant. Once the majority of the secrets had been revealed, the film tries too hard to continue the suspense with unnecessary attempts at story depth and … [Read more...]

Jug Face – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror (2018) – Day 2
This film focuses on a backwoods community. Very early on, a hillbilly stereotype is revealed - so yeah, it's that kind of movie. The community worships a ominous pit and offers it sacrifices in exchange for its healing powers. The pit speaks through a simpleton potter whom then fabricates a clay jug that would resemble the next person to be sacrificed. When the sacrifice cycle gets interrupted due to a stolen jug, the pit starts to kill indiscriminately. Surprisingly effective horror … [Read more...]
