Raid 2, The – Quickie Review
Outstanding follow-up to the hyper-violent original. This movie is much longer and it has much more of a story. The fighting sequences are still phenomenal and ferocious. The violence is so delightfully over the top and inventive. I mean really, you can't miss with a fighting duo armed with an aluminum baseball bat and a claw hammer. Oh so graphic. … [Read more...]
Ref, The – Quickie Review
Loud, abrasive, offensive and undeniably hysterical. By far, Denis Leary's best movie as a leading man although it is definitely bolstered by an immaculate supporting cast. This film is endlessly quotable with some jaw-droppingly crude one-liners. It doesn't lay on the holiday sentiment too thick which makes it watchable any time of the year. However, it is mandatory viewing every Christmas. … [Read more...]
Repulsion – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 31 / Film #3
A quiet Belgian immigrant is left alone in an apartment while her sister travels to Italy. And soon the isolation drives her to madness. Polanski's classic. Catherine Deneuve is stunning as the young woman slowly losing her grip on reality. Beautifully shot. … [Read more...]
Rogue – Quickie Review
A travel journalist partakes in a crocodile-watching boat tour while on assignment in Australia and he gets more than he bargained for. We've seen this before; it's just Jaws with a giant, aggressive crocodile. However, we haven't seen one from the director of Wolf Creek. Much better than your average killer aquatic creature feature. Strong violence and cast. … [Read more...]
Ravenous – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 27 / Film #4
An american military outpost take in the lone survivor of a failed cross-country expedition and he relays a story of cannibalism. Pitch black comedy and ferocious violence carry this film from start to finish. Robert Carlyle steals the show with a performance that ranges from gleefully maniacal to refined evil. I saw this at a screening and received the best promotional item, unspecified meat "jerky". … [Read more...]
[REC] – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 20 / Film #1
Thoroughly intense, incredibly claustrophobic Spanish thriller about a TV crew that shadows some firemen on a late night distress call at an apartment building which turns into a place of quarantine. Many effective jump scares and satisfying gore. I'm glad I finally got around to watching this one. … [Read more...]
Rufus – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 19 / Film #3
A quiet Canadian vampire drama about a teenage transient looking for a new start in a small town all the while he's being followed by someone from his past. Not your average vampire flick. It's more about the story than the killings. It's more about character than carnage. And Kim Coates is in it, so that's pretty cool. … [Read more...]
Red Army – Quickie Review
This documentary is about the Soviet Red Army hockey team as mainly told by one of the team's most storied captains, Slava Fetisov. This is a fascinating film that documents the parallels between the rise and fall of the Soviet empire in relation to it's hockey program and the end of the cold war. Very moving and intimate portrayal of the famous Russian Five as well as very humorous at times. One of the best hockey films, period. … [Read more...]
Rite, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 10 / Film #5
An American seminary student who is questioning his faith is sent to Italy to learn of exorcism from a priest experienced in the subject. The standard is set pretty high for movies about exorcisms, but this one is far better than other wannabes. It helps that it has a story we haven't seen before. Hopkins is still a powerhouse. … [Read more...]
