Chillerama – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror (2018) – Day 8

The last night of a drive-in theatre is the setting and the wraparound story for this horror/comedy anthology. This film starts with a man getting his wang bitten off by the corpse of his ex-wife, and then we’re off… I’m a big fan of horror inspired anthologies such as Creepshow, Trick ‘r Treat and Body …

Cooties – Quickie Review

A mysterious virus has hit an elementary school and turned it into 28 Days Later. The faculty must now band together to fight the infected students for survival. This is a solid horror-comedy. A cavalcade of extreme violence dressed with marvelous practical makeup effects and a cast with pure comedy chops. The script was co-written …

Child 44 – Quickie Review

Bleak story about the investigation of a child murderer in Stalin-era Russia. Based on a fictional book which was inspired by true events. Too many subplots get in the way of what could have been a decent procedural. The first cut of the film was 5 1/2 hours long so there may have been some …

Christmas Vacation – Quickie Review

Modern Christmas classic penned by the late John Hughes. So many great one-liners impeccably delivered as only Chevy Chase can. There are a couple of scenes where the sentiment rises in the cheesy level, but they are mostly short-lived and the lunacy continues. Randy Quaid is masterful. A yearly must watch.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier – Quickie Review

Not your typical superhero film. It plays like a political thriller as well as a very accomplished action film. This is one of the best films of the Marvel Universe and one of the best of 2014. The superior script allows for some rich performances. Chris Evans is Captain America. I can’t imagine anyone else …

Christmas Story, A – Quickie Review

My all-time favourite Christmas flick. I need to watch this every year without fail and sometimes more than once since it plays on TV all season long. Constantly laugh-out-loud funny. Darren McGavin steals the movie with his nonsensical cursing. However, Peter Billingsley easily gives one of the best child actor performances ever. Classic feel-good holiday film that’s …

Cane Toads: The Conquest – Quickie Review

A tongue-in-cheek documentary detailing the continuous westbound migration of cane toads across Australia and the devastation they leave in their wake. Extremely compelling, highly absorbing and very amusing. Even though these amphibians are tremendously destructive, they are amazing creatures. There are some crazy statistics in this film. Available on Netflix.
