Conjuring, The – Quickie Review

Very few movies have the ability to scare me any more. Jump scares don’t count, that’s just a reflex. However, this movie is so well executed. There is a constant feeling of dread and uneasiness. Smart script, brilliant pacing. The tension just builds and builds with a few brief moments of relief. A stellar achievement.

Dark Skies – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 14 / Film #3

Standard alien home invasion movie. A couple of unique touches, but nothing to make the movie to leave an impression. J.K. Simmons has a meaty supporting role, and he’s dynamite as usual.

In Fear – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 10 / Film #4

A young couple gets lost in a maze of back roads while trying to get to a music festival. This movie expertly builds tension very slowly. Since most of the primary events take place in a car, it gets very claustrophobic. The last 30-45 minutes are extremely intense. A riveting firecracker of a film.

Evil Dead – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 10 / Film #2

There’s no way this could ever top the original, but I’d have to problem stacking it up against any horror remake or most recent horror films. This centres around a married man who has stress induced gastrointestinal issues which end up manifesting into a little demon that can come and go out of the man’s arse whenever things intensify and kills the source of the stress. Key to a horror-comedy: come up with a ridiculous premise, cast comedic actors, have them play the …

Den, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 8 / Film #2

A young woman receives a grant to study the habits web-chat users on a Chatroulette type site and along the way she witnesses a murder. The best thing I can say about this movie is that it’s not terrible. The gimmick of having almost the entire movie from the point of view of a webcam …

Willow Creek – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 2 / Film #4

Effective found footage horror film in the vein of The Blair Witch Project just replace Witch with Bigfoot. Similar to BWP, it takes a while to get going, but once it does, the tension is ever present. The suspense is effortlessly built with just the use of sound effects and speculation. Though not original, one of …

Mud – Quickie Review

A tremendous performance by McConaughey supported by a stellar ensemble highlighted by newcomer Tye Sheridan. A dramatic slow-burner that is continually intriguing and full of surprises. Easily one of McConaughey’s best.
