American Mary – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 1 / Film #2

A cash-strapped med student delves into the world of body modification surgery to help her make ends meet. You know, that old story. This movie is pretty f’d up which translates to “me likey”. Plenty of gore and weirdness to satisfy most horror freaks. There’s a part where the lead encounters a security guard, let’s …

Funhouse, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 1 / Film #1

Schlocky, ’80s fun from legendary horror director, Tobe Hooper. Everything that should make this film terrible actually makes this movie ever so watchable and entertaining. Not as much gore as you’d expect from the director and from its release era. The scariest thing about the movie is the fact that the lead actor’s real name …

Absentia – Quickie Review

This low-budget, super-natural horror flick really packs a punch. A bit of a slow-burner, but once this thing gets going the tension really holds and the script keeps you guessing. With jump scares throughout, this small film satisfies.

There’s Nothing Out There – Quickie Review

Common horror film scenario, several teens travel to a cabin on the lake for spring break only to have it spoiled by killer creature. Very meta film that predates Scream by 5 years. As every horror movie cliche unfolds, one for the characters calls out the stupidity of the situation and their motives. Great joke …

Wolf Creek – Quickie Review

Early entry in the torture porn genre. More build up and introductory story than most others of the same ilk. Inspired by true events. The film boasts solid gore and an out and out bad-ass villain.

A Sister Act – A Dozen Summers Review

I was recently contacted by Kenton Hall, the writer/director/co-star of the British film I’m about to discuss, offering me a chance to review his independent project prior to its release. And I replied with a, “Jolly good ol’ chap, I’m gob-smacked, you must be taking a piss, I’d love to.” Actually, I didn’t say any …

Child’s Play – Quickie Review

It has been a couple of years since I’ve last seen the movie and I hadn’t seen it since its theatrical release. It holds up pretty well. The puppet special effects look as good as they did in 1988. It’s still creepy and surprisingly more violent than I remember. Me likey.

Lost Boys, The – Quickie Reviews

This was a recent rewatch and sadly, it has diminished a bit for me. The Frog Brothers used to be great comic relief. Now I just find them annoying. There still some gore, but there wasn’t as many onscreen deaths as I remembered. However, the movie does feature an ’80s beach party led by a …

Dr. Giggles – Quickie Review

Camp is the order of the day in this surprisingly funny, heavily gory and underrated horror film. Larry Drake gives a wonderfully measured, over-the-top performance. Clever death scenes, a whole lot of fun.
