From Beyond – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 16 / Film #2

A scientist duo develops a machine that enhances the user’s third eye with drastic results. The violence is strong, the makeup effects are crazy. This is exactly what you’d expect from the Gordon/Yuzna collaboration. Ridiculous fun, Jeffrey Combs expertly hams in it.

Visiting Hours – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 16 / Film #1

When an obsessed killer is unsuccessful with his latest victim, he has to make further attempts while she is in recovery at the hospital. Michael Ironside is at his creepiest in this tension filled Canadian exploitation film from the early ’80s. Genre classic which also features Bill Shatner!

Red Army – Quickie Review

This documentary is about the Soviet Red Army hockey team as mainly told by one of the team’s most storied captains, Slava Fetisov. This is a fascinating film that documents the parallels between the rise and fall of the Soviet empire in relation to it’s hockey program and the end of the cold war. Very …

Halloween (1978) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 15 / Film #6

I know this movie is an annual religion to some people, but this is only my second time seeing it and first in well over 20 years. This movie is just a clinic of building suspense and a prime example of less is more. It hits all the right notes for a slasher flick and …

Station Agent, The – Quickie Review

This movie is beautiful. Touching, brutally honest, and very funny. The entire cast is dynamite. A powerhouse, star-making performance from Peter Dinklage. I love this movie.

Galaxy Of Terror – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 15 / Film #5

A spacecraft sets out on a rescue mission and things don’t go as planned. Eclectic ensemble which includes Mr. Hand, Joanie (but not Chachi), Sid Haig and a baby-faced, Robert Englund. Oozing with gore, crude creature and special effects, laboured performances, cheesy script and a scene with a maggot I won’t soon forget. All of …

Annabelle – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 15 / Film #4

Thoroughly disappointing prequel to the vastly superior, The Conjuring. An attempted jump scare here, a contrived scare there. Eerie music here, manic screams there. It tries really hard to be something, but it just falls flat.

Maggie – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 15 / Film #3

A very different spin on the zombie genre. It’s more of a family struggle drama than anything else. The horror is subtle and more psychological. Schwarzenegger gives a touching performance as the supportive father of an infected daughter. The score is beautifully emotional and haunting. This is a special movie.
