Bleak story about the investigation of a child murderer in Stalin-era Russia. Based on a fictional book which was inspired by true events. Too many subplots get in the way of what could have been a decent procedural. The first cut of the film was 5 1/2 hours long so there may have been some essential connections left out. Tom Hardy is solid, but it’s far from his best. Watch the HBO produced movie, Citizen X, for a much better take on the actual events.
