31 Nights Of Horror

Vagrant, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 14 / Film #2

Over-the-top campy, horror-comedy about a man who is being terrorizes in his new house by an invading hobo starring cult favourites Bill Paxton and Michael Ironside as well as Kuato as title character. Super fun, never takes itself too seriously, a surprise treat. Another surprise, it was executive-produced by the one and only, Mel Brooks. …

Capturing The Friedmans – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 14 / Film #1

This is a very unsettling and horrific documentary about an upper-class Jewish family that is torn apart after the father and youngest son are accused of some heinous crimes. The movie does an excellent job of unfolding the story and it reveals everything unbiasedly as you hear arguments from both sides. Riveting, yet upsetting film.

Silent Hill – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 13 / Film #4

This movie is way too long and way too convoluted. I’m sure the game of which it’s based is very expansive so it was hard to condense it fluidly. The art direction is great and it looks gorgeous. And there’s a little bit of blood in it. Of all the crazy imagery and events in …

Omen, The (1976) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 13 / Film #3

Exquisite supernatural thriller from director Richard Donner. This was my first time seeing it and even though I already knew the outcome, I was still riveted. Wonderful screenplay and believable performances. Love David Warner, always a commanding presence.

Snuff – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 13 / Film #2

A cult lead by a Charles Manson-like figure is on a murdering spree. This movie is terrible from the awful dubbing, to the amateurish editing and continuity errors and to the audacious attempt to make the audience like as though they’ve just witnessed a real murder at the end of the film. The whole movie …

Deathdream – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 13 / Film #1

A young soldier returns home from Vietnam the very night his family has been notified of his death and like many others before him, war has changed him. A creepy, effective horror film for director Bob Clark and the first film of makeup effects guru, Tom Savini. Great aging and decaying from the master.

Tusk – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 12 / Film #2

This movie is f’d up. It really is, but I loved. Ignore the story line, the gore, the makeup effects – this movie belongs to Michael Parks. He’s absolutely bat shit crazy, but he makes you care for him and his plight. It’s so much more than just Human Centipede with a walrus. This movie, …

House Of Wax (1953) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 12 / Film #1

Classic Vincent Price tale of macabre. Obviously, it’s head and shoulders above the remake. I assume the premise would have to horrifying at the time. While the scares aren’t there, the charm is, as well as wonderfully poetic script. Price is impeccable. The only thing the remake holds over the original is that we get …

Camel Spiders – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 11 / Film #3

I didn’t know exactly what I was getting to when I starting to watch this. That’s not true, I knew exactly what to expect and I got it in spades. The growth and reproduction rate of the spiders is a miracle of science. This is a marvel of CGI and blue screen effects. My brain …

Black Sheep (2006) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 11 / Film #2

Genetically altered sheep run amuck on a New Zealand farm and start eating the humans while the unlucky attack survivors turn into some kind of weresheep. Over the top gore effects provided by Peter Jackson’s WETA Workshop. Just plain silly fun, but not as funny as I would have hoped.
