Peeping Tom – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 25 / Film #1

A young man lives his life through the lens of a camera, stalks women and then films their deaths to capture their terror. This movie floored me. A intriguing character study of a introverted voyeur with a tortured upbringing. Complications arise when he grows feelings for a potential subject for one of his films. An …

Das Boot – Quickie Review

The story of soldiers on a German U-boat during WWII. This movie is a masterpiece. Seemingly authentic, incredibly tense and very claustrophobic. Top notch performances all around and the film manages to do the impossible; it makes you feel sympathetic for these German soldiers whom are caught up in a war and a government’s ideology …

I Saw The Devil – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 22 / Film #2

A grieving man repeatedly plays a brutal form of catch and release with a serial killer whom he suspects to have murdered his fiancee. An absolute master class in suspense. One of the best of its genre. The acting is off the charts good. Continually intense, cringe-inducing violence. It certainly wouldn’t be easy for everyone …

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 17 / Film #1

How’d I go this long without seeing this film? I love how there’s no exposition at the beginning. It just jumps right into the story and characters are already figuring out the issue and you’re just watching it all unfold. Great score, great cast, great script. Wonderful cinematography, there are some crazy angles in this …

Station Agent, The – Quickie Review

This movie is beautiful. Touching, brutally honest, and very funny. The entire cast is dynamite. A powerhouse, star-making performance from Peter Dinklage. I love this movie.

Equilibrium – Quickie Review

Christian Bales stars in this futuristic action thriller set in a time where all forms of emotion has been deemed illegal. Plain and simple, this movie rocks. The action sequences are sublime and I’d stack up the gun and sword play choreography against anything in recent memory. Perfectly executed. Bale is top notch as usual.

Frailty – Quickie Review

This is Bill Paxton’s directorial debut, and it’s magnificent. A perfect example of horror without gore. It’s all implied. High tension throughout the movie. Terrific performances by all. The ending hits you with a wallop as the story comes to a head with one ingenious twist after another. One of my all-time favourite horror films.

Interview, The (1998) – Quickie Review

This movie is stunning. The most exciting film where nothing happens. It’s a cat and mouse chase movie without the chase. Completely dialogue driven. It feels like a filmed play set in an interrogation room. So many twists and turns. Is he the killer? Is he not? Fantastic performances especially from Hugo Weaving who is …

Rango – Quickie Review

Absolutely gorgeous looking, Oscar winning animated film. Definitive proof animation does not have to be in 3D to be rich in texture and to pop off the screen. Smart script, perhaps more geared towards adults, but still enough to keep kids’ attention. One of my favourite animated films.
