Hellmouth – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 26 / Film #5

This is a stylistic, horror mindf*ck about a grave-keeper who’s forced into a hellish dimension from the writer of Pontypool and featuring its star, Stephen McHattie. A story that goes all over the place. Worth a one time viewing for the visuals and to see McHattie doing his best campy Henriksen impression, but that’s about …

Horrible Way To Die, A – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 22 / Film #1

An escaped serial killer is on run and searching for his ex-girlfriend who is starting a new life in a small town. Two parallel stories each told in non-linear fashion until they collide at the end. Decent, but it takes too long to get going. It’s worth sticking it out to the ending, but there’s …

Halloween (1978) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 15 / Film #6

I know this movie is an annual religion to some people, but this is only my second time seeing it and first in well over 20 years. This movie is just a clinic of building suspense and a prime example of less is more. It hits all the right notes for a slasher flick and …

House Of Wax (1953) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 12 / Film #1

Classic Vincent Price tale of macabre. Obviously, it’s head and shoulders above the remake. I assume the premise would have to horrifying at the time. While the scares aren’t there, the charm is, as well as wonderfully poetic script. Price is impeccable. The only thing the remake holds over the original is that we get …

Host, The (2006) – Quickie Review

An American military pathologist dumps hazardous fluid into Korean waterways and after a period of time, a deadly sea monster is created. A super fun creature feature from South Korean. Seamless special effects high-light this film and the humour has as much bite as the creature. One of the best of its genre.

Hobo With A Shotgun – Quickie Review

Based on the fake trailer with the same name which played before Grindhouse for the Canadian theatrical run. Over the top violence, creative death sequences (love the nooses with the crossbows), and thoroughly coated with cheese. Rutger Hauer is perfectly cast. Terrific fun.

Hard Core Logo – Quickie Review

This is a mockumentary that follows a punk band during a reunion tour. A darkly comic, endlessly entertaining and ultimately tragic tale. One of my favourite music films and easily one of the best Canadian made films, right up there with the other Canuck classics: Ice Flow Jungle, Maple Syrup Blues and Hockey Homicide.
