Dead Heat (1988) – Quickie Review

The dream team casting of Treat Williams and Joe Piscopo was finally realized for this horror-action-comedy. Filled to the brim with good ol’ clean ’80s fun, camp and violence. It doesn’t take itself too serious nor should it. Silliness abound.

Cabin Fever – Quickie Review

Darkly humourous, visually disgusting, perfect entertainment for warped minds like mine. Definitely not for everyone. I remember a few people getting up and leaving during the screening. More than a few cringe-inducing scenes as well as one of the strangest moments you’ll ever see in a movie. Pancakes!!!

Event Horizon – Quickie Review

This is essentially Hellraiser In Space. Incredibly haunting tone throughout the movie. One of the few movies that consistently gives me the willies. Sam Neil is deliciously insane. Watch the found footage of the captain’s video log in slo-mo, it’s horrifying.

Critters – Quickie Review

It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but I remember it being campy fun with a good amount of gore. A nice throwback to the creature features of the ’50s. Rewatch mandatory.

Ankle Biters – Quickie Review

This movie gives indie horror flicks a bad name. I like the idea behind it. I like laughing at its ridiculousness, but mostly I love the name and what it infers. It tries so hard to be something more. The bizarre angles and the unnecessary slo-mo camerawork are mostly just distractions. I like that most …

Pet Sematary – Quickie Review

I have not seen this movie since I was much younger, but the thought of it bothers me more now since I have a young son myself. There was some truly eerie scenes in this film and some cringe-inducing events with a scalpel. A rewatch and possible re-rating may be needed.

Child’s Play – Quickie Review

It has been a couple of years since I’ve last seen the movie and I hadn’t seen it since its theatrical release. It holds up pretty well. The puppet special effects look as good as they did in 1988. It’s still creepy and surprisingly more violent than I remember. Me likey.

Saw – Quickie Review

The first of the series is still the best. Extreme gory, very original, creative deaths and a jaw dropping twist ending. It’s enjoyable and continues to be creepy.

Lost Boys, The – Quickie Reviews

This was a recent rewatch and sadly, it has diminished a bit for me. The Frog Brothers used to be great comic relief. Now I just find them annoying. There still some gore, but there wasn’t as many onscreen deaths as I remembered. However, the movie does feature an ’80s beach party led by a …

Hostel – Quickie Review

One of the first mainstream movies to be deemed, torture porn. It’s well made movie, very creepy and very violent. Not for anyone with a weak stomach. It’s very graphic and not surprisingly, full of dark humour. It’s among the first of its kind, and it remains one of the best.
