976-EVIL – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 24 / Film #4

Wow. This movie was terrible. I can’t believe it was directed by Robert Englund and co-written by a future Oscar winner. One-dimensional characters, and the only character with more than that is horribly performed. This movie made me sad.

Thing, The (1982) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 24 / Film #3

It had been a long time since I’d last seen this film, and it’s even better than I remember. I’ve watched so much crap this month, it’s so refreshing when story, special effects, acting and everything else just work together so symbiotically. Near perfection. I just can’t believe how much this movie was inspired by …

Laid To Rest – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 24 / Film #2

This movie is nasty, purely vicious and brutal. Killings with a serrated blade are always much more graphic. So if you’re watching this film only for the murders, it will fulfill your bloodlust. However, there is absolutely no plot. People get killed, move to a new location, people get killed and so forth. Expected more …

New York Ripper – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 24 / Film #1

This has the Fulci gore, sleaze and cinematography you know and love, but this one just didn’t grab me story wise. And a killer who impersonates a duck? I mean, c’mon. Just too hoaky for me.

Grabbers – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 23 / Film #3

A small island of the coast of Ireland has been invaded by aliens, the only way to survive: to be obliteratingly drunk. Very fun and very funny horror-comedy definitely in the vein of Tremors. The creatures themselves come in various sizes. At its largest state, it is probably best described as a giant centi-pus. Plenty …

Dead Birds – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 23 / Film #2

Early work from the writer of You’re Next and The Guest. This is a surprisingly effective horror-western about a group of bank robbers that hide out in a haunted house after a heist goes wrong. Creepy effects, genuine jump scares. Cast of great character actors including Mark Boone Junior and Michael Shannon. A nice find …

Frankenstein (1931) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 23 / Film #1

You all know the story. Mad scientist and his assistant rummage through graveyards and medical schools for body parts to build a man and reanimate him. Simplistic story telling, jumps right in without exposition. With limited speech, Karloff creates a menacing yet sympathetic monster. Well-deserving of its horror classic status.

Session 9 – Quickie Review

One of the most atmospherically creepy movies I have ever seen. The tone is set earlier with subtle chills dropped during the slow build which leads to a sensational climax. Spot-on performances from the terrific ensemble. This is among a handful of movies that leave me with an indelible sustained sense of fear after each …

Don’t Go In The Woods – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 22 / Film #4

Various people go into the woods and they are killed at various times in various different ways by a feral woodsman. That’s it, that’s the movie. I can’t even give it points for campy fun. It’s just terrible top to bottom. It quite possibly could be the longest 82 minutes of my life.

Crimson Peak – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 22 / Film #3

Atmospheric: Check. Stunning Art Direction: Check. Original and Creepy Ghost Design: Check. Great Movie: … if you’re looking for a check, keep waiting. This is a case where the parts are better than the sum. I wanted to like this movie so bad. It’s just missing something plus they gave away every potential jump scare …
