From A Whisper To A Scream – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 26 / Film #4

A weak anthology horror in the vein of the much superior Twilight Zone and Creepshow. The stories are tied together by a librarian telling a reporter about the town’s horrid past. The third tale boasts some pretty graphic violence, but the story itself doesn’t add up to much. Really, the only redeeming aspect of the …

Uninvited, The (1944) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 26 / Film #3

What starts off as a whimsical countryside comedy, slowly morphs into a slapstick horror and then finally into a full-blooded suspense with a twisting script. Perhaps too much exposition to fully explain the goings-on, but entertaining nonetheless. Ray Milland is utterly charming in the lead.

Cell, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 26 / Film #2

Visually stunning and darkly disturbing at times. The ending is exceptionally thrilling with three stories of crisis happening simultaneously and expertly edited together. Vincent D’Onofrio gives a towering performance as the troubled serial killer and his terrifying inner self. Definitely not for everyone, but I love it.

Dracula (1931) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 26 / Film #1

Original English language telling of the Bram Stoker classic. Legendary score and legendary performance by Lugosi. I was a little disappointed that he didn’t shout, “Pull the strings!” or say something disparaging about Karloff. While highly enjoyable, I couldn’t get past the hoaky fake bat. Although, it didn’t look as ridiculous as the actors trying …

Killer Klowns From Outer Space – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 25 / Film #5

Total lunacy. Marvelously inspired art direction and prop design. Every aspect of clown and carnival culture has been imaginatively repurposed. There are some freaky-ass clowns in this film that can only be defeated by having their noses shot. John Vernon is a hoot as the skeptical policeman.

Sea Beast – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 25 / Film #4

This is the true story about TV’s Parker Lewis and his continuing attempt at career legitimacy following the 15 minutes of fame which the TV series brought him. If Predators was set in a small fishing town with a $3 effects budget and a script to match, that would be a better film than this …

Conjuring, The – Quickie Review

Very few movies have the ability to scare me any more. Jump scares don’t count, that’s just a reflex. However, this movie is so well executed. There is a constant feeling of dread and uneasiness. Smart script, brilliant pacing. The tension just builds and builds with a few brief moments of relief. A stellar achievement.

Slumber Party Massacre, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 25 / Film #3

A frustrated door-to-door drill salesman is tired of having doors slammed in his face so he decides to take it out on the children of his failed sales attempts. His commissions may be low, but the body count will be high. Little does he know, someone is watching his every move and she is really …

Peeping Tom – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 25 / Film #1

A young man lives his life through the lens of a camera, stalks women and then films their deaths to capture their terror. This movie floored me. A intriguing character study of a introverted voyeur with a tortured upbringing. Complications arise when he grows feelings for a potential subject for one of his films. An …

Lifeforce – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 24 / Film #5

Just when you thought it was safe to bring naked humanoid alien forms in suspended-animation back to earth… they turn out to be space vampires! Starts off really strong, but then goes on for too long. The London under attack scene with 30 minutes left looks like a scene from “That’s Armageddon!” Congrats if you …
