Horrible Way To Die, A – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 22 / Film #1

An escaped serial killer is on run and searching for his ex-girlfriend who is starting a new life in a small town. Two parallel stories each told in non-linear fashion until they collide at the end. Decent, but it takes too long to get going. It’s worth sticking it out to the ending, but there’s …

Ugly, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 21 / Film #3

A twisted thriller from New Zealand about a psychiatrist whom interviews a serial killer in a mental institution. Very stylish, told in flashbacks as well as mental delusions. It could be deemed gory except the blood looks like black ink. Plenty of suspense, solid script.

Mimic – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 21 / Film #2

Guillero del Toro’s first American movie. It’s a slick modern update on the mutated creature features of the 1950s. I watched the director’s cut. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the theatrical version so I couldn’t tell you the difference, but I enjoyed this alternate version. Solid story, great creature design and effects, great …

Fog, The (1980) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 21 / Film #1

I know I have nothing to apologize for, but I will start this review off with an apology because I know how much some people revere this movie. I’m sorry, but this film underwhelmed me. Sure it was moody, but it’s so dull. It doesn’t fall to Ghost Of Mars depths, but this is low …

Sleepy Hollow (1999) – Quickie Review

This movie is so gleefully over the top violent. Crazy gory, almost cartoonish. This Tim Burton movie is sooooooooooooooo Tim Butron. The art direction is stunning. Depp is effortlessly humourous as the cowardly Crane and Walken is positively frightening as the Horseman in flashbacks. Clever script, great ensemble, gorgeous Gothic horror.

Exorcist, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 20 / Film #3

No need for a synopsis, you all know the story. Still far and away the best of its genre. Expertly crafted, perfectly performed, indelible imagery. The crab-walk still creeps the shit out of me. Maybe not as scary as once perceived, but it’s still compelling as ever.

Byzantium – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 20 / Film #2

A mysterious mother and daughter take refuge in a rundown hotel while trying to escape their lengthy past. A quietly romantic and occasionally violent vampire tale. Neil Jordan has directed a wonderful companion piece for his other time chronicling vampire film, Interview With The Vampire. Multi-layered script told in narrative and flashbacks. Beautifully photographed.

[REC] – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 20 / Film #1

Thoroughly intense, incredibly claustrophobic Spanish thriller about a TV crew that shadows some firemen on a late night distress call at an apartment building which turns into a place of quarantine. Many effective jump scares and satisfying gore. I’m glad I finally got around to watching this one.

Cannibal Girls – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 19 / Film #5

A new couple stay over at a B&B only to discover that the legends of the house are true. This is a sometimes funny, sometimes gory Canadian exploitation film was directed by Ivan Reitman and star the not yet SCTV vets, Andrea Martin and a Gene Shalit looking, Eugene Levy. I watched it with the alternative audio …

Zombi 2 – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 19 / Film #4

Who cares about the thin plot? This movie is all about the zombies. Over the top gore and some top notch makeup effects, exactly what you’d expect from a Fulci film. A handful of holy shit moments including a zombie fighting a shark! How has that not become a full length Sci-Fi channel movie yet?
