Sublime – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 29 / Film #6

A man goes in for a colonoscopy and due to clerical error he receives the incorrect procedure. During recovery he’s on heavy meds so most of the time he doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not. This is a very twisted film with some cringe-inducing gore. The movie has a very strong Jacob’s Ladder type …

Splinter – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 29 / Film #5

A hostage situation quickly turns into a fight for survival as everyone must band together to fight a dangerous parasite that is looking for new hosts. Nice, simple story. Parasite shows up and you just go with it. Impressive makeup and special effects. The final creature is a work of art. Gratuitous blood and then …

Citadel – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 29 / Film #4

An agoraphobic father must rescue his baby daughter from the gang of young feral hoods who attacked his wife months earlier. The gang itself has sight based on fear. As someone who suffers from anxiety myself, the director did an excellent job of conveying the feeling of anxiousness. That certainly helped increase the tension for …

Midnight Son – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 29 / Film #3

A young man with a blood disorder and his skin is sensitive to sunlight doesn’t realize he’s a vampire because the script requires him not to know. This isn’t terrible; it’s just nothing we haven’t seen before. Netflix figured I’d give this movie higher than 4 stars. Nope.

Baby Blues – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 29 / Film #2

A young couple buys a new home and they find that the previous owners have left a strange doll behind. This pretty much plays like a Child’s Play/Annabelle hybrid, but not a good one. Many failed jump scares fill 90 wasted minutes. Go ahead and give it a miss.

Man Who Laughs, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 29 / Film #1

I wanted to like this film because of the pop culture history that’s attached. I just couldn’t get into it. Perhaps silent films just aren’t for me. However, the lead, Conrad Veidt, is exceptional. And his character’s appearance was the real inspiration for the original design of The Joker. Some may see this as a …

Fido – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 28 / Film #5

Pleasantville with zombies. I think that’s pretty accurate description. A smart comedy with an occasional zombie attack. Billy Connolly is utterly charming as the loyal title character. However, the whole cast is great as everyone is playing it straight. It would be very easy to ham it up with this subject matter, but that doesn’t …

Invisible Man, The (1933) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 28 / Film #4

First off, I love Claude Rains so this review will probably be a bit biased. He is splendidly evil, ruthless, eloquent and darkly comedic. This is probably my favourite of the classic Universal Monster films. Rains is perfectly cast since his voice is so refined and distinguishable. Superb special effects for the time. Completely captivating.

Exorcist III, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 28 / Film #3

George C. Scott gives a commanding performance in the second follow-up to the classic that completely ignores the second part. Way better than the sequel, but a far cry of the original. It’s more of a murder mystery with elements of horror. The banter scenes early on between Kinderman and Dyer are very funny. Also, …

Eyes Without A Face – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 28 / Film #2

A brilliant surgeon kidnaps young women in order to procure their faces in hopes to restore his daughter’s face that was destroyed in a car wreck. Not scary, but definitely creepy. The surgical scene is more graphic than the one in John Woo’s Face/Off even though it’s from 1960 and shot in black and white. …
