Exorcist III, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 28 / Film #3

George C. Scott gives a commanding performance in the second follow-up to the classic that completely ignores the second part. Way better than the sequel, but a far cry of the original. It’s more of a murder mystery with elements of horror. The banter scenes early on between Kinderman and Dyer are very funny. Also, …

Eyes Without A Face – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 28 / Film #2

A brilliant surgeon kidnaps young women in order to procure their faces in hopes to restore his daughter’s face that was destroyed in a car wreck. Not scary, but definitely creepy. The surgical scene is more graphic than the one in John Woo’s Face/Off even though it’s from 1960 and shot in black and white. …

Psycho II – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 28 / Film #1

It would not be an enviable task to try and follow-up an absolute classic. While it does not reach the heights of the original, this is a very worthy sequel. Well crafted, very suspenseful script with plenty of clever surprises. Perkins is sublime once again as Norman Bates who may or not be slipping back …

Slither – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 27 / Film #6

A meteor crashes near a small town and its contents start to infect the town’s citizens. How have I not seen this movie until now? It’s so awesome. It has everything I love. So much blood, so much gooey ickiness. First class humour mixed with cheesy one-liners. This will immediately be added to my regular …

Nightwatch (1997) – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 27 / Film #5

Insanely twisted and unsettling suspense thriller. It has been a while since I’d last since it and I forgot just how much I enjoyed it. Continually intense, keeps you guessing all the way through. Delightfully disturbing with a sly sense of humour. Stellar cast including Brad “f’ing” Dourif.

Ravenous – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 27 / Film #4

An american military outpost take in the lone survivor of a failed cross-country expedition and he relays a story of cannibalism. Pitch black comedy and ferocious violence carry this film from start to finish. Robert Carlyle steals the show with a performance that ranges from gleefully maniacal to refined evil. I saw this at a …

Arachnophobia – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 27 / Film #3

Wednesday, July 18, 1990. I was there opening night. Spiders in general don’t scare me, but when in large numbers or shown in extreme close-up on a giant screen, they creep me out a bit. It still makes me cringe a little. Pure popcorn entertainment. John Goodman as the extermintor is totally channeling Carl Spackler including …

Burning, The – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 27 / Film #1

Fantastic slasher flick from the early 80s. Solid story, really gruesome makeup effects by Tom Savini. It’s crazy how many people involved with this movie are still working today. I don’t know what’s funnier: that this was one of the Weinsteins first movies or seeing Jason Alexander with a full head of hair.

Afflicted – Quickie Review

Highly original take on the vampire mythology and one of the best uses of the found footage genre. The special effects are stunning and seamless. An absolute delight from start to finish. Just suburb film-making.

Hellmouth – Quickie Review: 31 Nights Of Horror – Day 26 / Film #5

This is a stylistic, horror mindf*ck about a grave-keeper who’s forced into a hellish dimension from the writer of Pontypool and featuring its star, Stephen McHattie. A story that goes all over the place. Worth a one time viewing for the visuals and to see McHattie doing his best campy Henriksen impression, but that’s about …
